Nail fungus is a common condition, often caused by many different fungi (yeasts or molds) in the environment, which typically begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your toenail. As the fungal infection goes deeper, nail fungus may cause your nail to discolor, thicken, and crumble at the edge.
These infections can develop in people at any age, but it's more common in older adults. Dr. Ray Ng wants patients to know that toenail fungus is not a condition they have to live with. It is treatable, and he expects full resolution after treatment.
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of foot and heel pain. It involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes (plantar fascia).
Plantar fasciitis frequently causes stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. The pain normally decreases as you get up and move, but it might return after long periods of standing or when you stand up after sitting.
Dr. Ng works closely with you to develop a treatment plan that considers your lifestyle, deciding the best approach to treat the condition that puts you on the road to recovery without surgery.
Morton’s neuroma is a common condition that is very painful and affects the ball of the foot. However, a neuroma can be found in other areas of the foot as well. Neuromas in the foot typically refer to the thickening of the tissue surrounding the nerve leading to the toes. The pain often feels intermittent, and it is the main symptom of Morton’s neuroma. It feels like you are standing on a pebble or marble in your shoe or a bunched-up sock. You can get numbness or tingling in your foot when the pain radiates and have difficulty walking or standing because of the pain in your foot.
Ingrown toenails are one of the most common podiatric conditions in which the corner or side of a toenail grows into soft flesh. The result is pain, redness, swelling, and, sometimes, an infection. Ingrown toenails usually affect your big toe.
If the ingrown toenail pain is severe or spreading, it is important to see a foot specialist; to avoid infection and minimize damage to the nail during treatment. If you have diabetes or another condition that causes poor blood flow to your feet, you are at greater risk of complications of ingrown toenails.
A plantar wart is a hard, grainy growth that usually appears on the bottom of the foot, in areas where the most pressure is absorbed. Plantar warts occur when the human papillomavirus (HPV) makes contact with the skin on the soles of the feet. The virus is usually introduced into the body through small cuts or openings on the bottom of the foot. Because they are spread through viral infections, those with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop these warts.
While most warts are visible, some plantar warts grow inwards—due to too much pressure—and form a callus. While most cases of plantar warts can go away on their own with time, most people want faster relief. The goal of podiatric treatment for plantar warts is to completely remove the wart, not cover it up. When self-care and home remedies fail, it may be time to visit the podiatrist.
Diabetes can cause nerve damage which leads to a loss of sensation in the feet. Foot problems are a common complication of diabetes, and one should see a foot care specialist regularly for ordinary foot problems.
DIABETIC NEUROPATHY
Diabetic neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that can occur if you have diabetes, which most often damages nerves in your legs and feet. Depending on the affected nerves, diabetic neuropathy symptoms can range from pain and numbness in your legs and feet to problems with your digestive system, urinary tract, blood vessels, and heart. Some people have mild symptoms. But for others, diabetic neuropathy can be quite painful and disabling.
